Scott Frank, scribe for such films as Minority Report and The Wolverine, has revealed that he’s the mystery Assassin’s Creed screenwriter. Well, to be exact, Frank has revealed that he’s rewriting a previous draft of the film, most likely the version that helped Ubisoft Motion Pictures land a deal with 20th Century Fox. While talking about his work on The Wolverine, Frank disclosed, “I’m rewriting Assassin’s Creed right now, and what I love about it is that I’ve never adapted a video game before and it has its own set of challenges. Especially in the world of rewrites, I love trying to do something completely different if I can.”
There’s no word on who was the initial Assassin’s Creed screenwriter, but it’s common in deals of this nature that Ubisoft probably hired an unheralded newcomer to work on the script just to shop it around to film studios. Often times in these situations, the identity of the initial screenwriter is never revealed.
Ubisoft Motion Pictures retains 100% creative control on all their feature films but it appears that they’re willing to play ball with Fox and Fassbender. Frank’s filmography is full of projects that he’s worked on for Fox. Interesting enough, Frank also has some impressive directorial experience. Is it possible that not only is he rewriting the script, he’s also in line to direct? Currently, Assassin’s Creed is set for release on Memorial Day 2015.
